The things I like most about Bradenton and Manatee County
A lot has changed since I was young and growing up in Bradenton. All I can say is it's not as I remember and only a fragment of a memory I once had. The Village of the Arts though is a definite pull, something for Bradenton to be proud of. The downtown area and the beaches are wonderful as well. It's nothing like it used to be, but it's definitely original.
My Interests & Hobbies
Seeing, feeling, understanding and making films! Cinema and everything about it! Also writing and all kinds of music. Everything from Aimee Mann to The Zombies. The Beat Generation, everything about it. Making and serving good cocktails. Knowing how to have a good time and knowing when to sit back and relax.
My Favorite Local Restaurant(s)
Zio's, Thai Palace, Charisma, Carmen's
My favorite way to experience Bradenton and Manatee County the way locals do
Driving around late at night in such a small and quiet town is fun. Essentially, you have to make your own fun. There's The Village of the Arts, which is always great, but it's only once a month when they have extraordinary events. For the late night crowd, the classic thing to do is head to the bars and check out some local music. Heading over to a lot of our local shops is always fun if you have money. But for the crowd with little pocket flow, it's an easy decision: The beach.
My Favorite Local Event(s)
The first Friday of every month at The Village of the Arts. Concerts are always fun too. Usually for those though, it's best to head to Sarasota.
My high school
Bayshore High School (Bradenton, FL; 2003-2007)
My College(s)
Florida State University (Tallahassee, FL; 2007-2011)
Favorite Movie or Play
My favorite film of all time is Short Cuts by Robert Altman, but there are so many more that I love and cherish. I could sincerely and literally go on all day.
Favorite Artist
That all depends on what mood I'm in, ask me daily if you want.
I recently found time to get on it. Right now I am using four different social networks! Its a handful! I only wanted to start using this once I began writing again. Thank-you setting this up!
Yes - well - when you're attempting to work with the city and county, and the powers that be, and the funding agencies currently looking at the downtown with consultants and surveyers --- then you want to do your absolute best to "put a good face on it." I can't be less than honest, but one has to seek balance or we'd never get anywhere.
HA!
You have changed it.
Capitulating to us old fogies. Don't ever lose your edge, Thomas - it makes for good discussion.
Rant on!
See my note on Bradenton. I tend to believe that our observations over time about this place (and others - like my home town), are conditioned by our experience of things like family, security, age, etc. What you saw was real, however, beneath it was something worse. For example, once there were those, who, in my father's childhood who still remembered the South as it was antebellum. They were sad things had changed - seemingly for the worse: a decimated society, a wounded nation, once-beautiful plantations destroyed, economy limping like an old soldier. Was that true? Yes, of course. But what was the reality beneath the surface?
That is quite a severe crit of the area, Thomas. But I take it in its context - and certainly understand that at every stage of life it seems we need different stimuli, varied environments. It's true I probably wouldn't have been drawn to this area until my forties. And really, before I became better acquainted with the Suncoast via in-laws, I was drawn more to the Atlantic side of the state.
Good to hear your honest impressions. Have a great semester finish at FSU and see you during the holidays, eh?
easy for you to say - now that you've emigrated to the foriegn capital of Tall and the enclave of FSU :>
seriously, I wonder if there is a way to get to "real" stats -
my money is on this:
there has never been any different level of crime, (and all the other things we ascribe to change, different eras, the old days, etc) - per capita, here or anywhere.
I know, it's any contradictory conjecture is risky - but I can't help but believe PERCEPTION drives many of the conclusions we derive from statistics; and the assessments, projections and future choices we make are generated from assumptions and less than all the facts.
whatever!
HA good to see you yesterday, get some sleep.
