Oh - didn't even notice your comments until just now, Leslie. They weren't in the discussion thread so I missed them.

On note #1 - No that's a different process. That's called Mixed Media. On #2 - It's usually a writing thing. Writers responding to other forms of art. But I like what you noticed about "Pictures" -
If you look at the info I left links to - you'll see that the term began as a strict sort of form classically. Now it's much broader - but I still think, based on the original root of the word, is mainly about writers response to other forms of art.

Here's an artist taking a broader approach:

Drew Davidson really gets into it deeply here:

that's all for now, thanks for chiming in.

What about Pictures at an Exhibition--would that be ekphrastic music? I'm pretty sure Moussoursky wrote that piece after going to an actual exhibition. It's different than the "fantasies" that are based on other pieces of music, it's going from art to music. Is that the main feature of ekphrastic? It takes something from one kind of art into another, or can it be from writing to writing, music to music, or what?

Would it still be ekphrastic poetry if the poem was in the piece of art? I have lots of collages that I made after I wrote a poem and I included the poem in the collage. What is that called? I love taking one creation and making it part of another creation, but I always start with the writing and then make a collage expressing the poem and include at least part of it in the art. It's hard to go the other direction, at least for me. And I've also never done it about something some else wrote, it's always my stuff. Have other people on here done that too?
